OXX CoffeeBOXX Pod Coffee Maker Review

*UPDATE* The OXX Brand is no longer in business.

At First Glance

The OXX Coffeeboxx has set the bar really high for future coffee maker manufactures. I’ve used a lot of different style coffee maker over the years and the Coffeeboxx has blown them all out of the water. The lime green construction color (they now make offer it in a Black option) might not be your first choice for a coffee maker color but you’ll soon forget all about the color and fall in love with all the features and functions.

In this article we will review OXX’s claims of their Coffeeboxx being:

  • Crush Proof
  • Spill Proof
  • Water Resistant
  • Portable & Lightweight
  • Dust Resistant
  • Rust Proof
  • Impact Resistant

Extremely Rugged Design

From the moment you first unpack the Coffeeboxx you’ll realize that OXX’s claims of their Coffeeboxx being extremely rugged was not just a marketing ploy. This thing really is the most rugged coffee maker you’ll ever own.

Large Water Storage

The OXX Coffeeboxx has the largest and only spill proof water tank on the market at 2.5L/84.5oz, you’ll always have hot coffee or water at hand. Up to 10 cups of Joe before needing to refill the tank. The CoffeeBoxx is indeed spill proof.

OXX CoffeeBOXXAppearance

Now available in Lime Green or Black. The built in handle makes it easy to carry. It has six built-in tie down anchors. OXX claims that their Coffeeboxx has an “impact resistant shell” and that the core can withstand a crushing force of 500 pounds (see the truck photo above). It is also dust and water resistant to IP55 standards and weighs in at a whopping 11 pounds.

Dedicated Hot Water Source

The OXX Coffeeboxx does much more than make a great cup of coffee. With a separate hot water line you can steep your tea or make a quick meal with clean, coffee-free water.

First Trip Out

I don’t know about you guys but I personally like to take care of my stuff, so it lasts that much longer. That being said I wanted to see just how rugged this coffee maker really is so for my first trial run, I filled the water storage tank to see just how spill proof the tank really is and then literally tossed the Coffeeboxx in the back of my Jeep and went for a drive. The built in handle made it easy to carry to my Jeep. Keep in mind even though it has six built-in tie down anchors that I normally would use to secure it, I wanted to see just how rugged this thing really was. I could hear it rolling around in the back. I thought for sure my bedlined interior would leave some marks or show some sign of damage on the coffee maker.

Once I found a nice spot by the Columbia River, it was time to stop and see the damage. To my surprise the Coffeeboxx wasn’t damaged at all and barely had any marks from all the rolling around it did in the back of the Jeep. I pulled out the water tank and it had no signs of water leaking.

Before turning on your coffee maker make sure to keep in mind, you’ll need a 2,000 watt power inverter or generator to power the Coffeeboxx. It comes with a built-in 3′ retractable power cord which is a very handy feature to have and was all I needed to reach my power supply. I happen to have a Smittybuilt generator for camping so the power draw wasn’t a problem.

Right off the bat I noticed how quickly the Coffeeboxx heated up the water. It’s much faster than my coffee maker at home. The first pour was perfect and delicious! The second thing noticed was the dedicated hot water source. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to make hot coco or tea at home and had coffee grounds come out too. The clean up was quick and easy. I can’t wait to use it again. In fact I wouldn’t mind getting one for in our house!

Editor’s Update 10/1/16: We’ve taken our CoffeeBOXX on many adventures this summer and have enjoyed fresh coffee without any fuss or messy cleanup each time. It’s performed flawlessly!

Does it meet all it’s claims? From my experience so far, I would say most definitely! I am sincerely impressed with the quality of coffee maker that OXX is producing. I’ve even come to like the lime green color. I think it makes it easier to find. The most important part, is that the coffee taste perfect every time. I think maybe their new carry bag and limited edition black OXX is in our future.
